What is the scientific name for when rain evaporates before touching the ground?

It is called virga.Virga occurs when there is a rapid decrease of moisture content of the air at lower levels.Virga can cause dry microburst which is dangerous to aircrafts.

Reply:Kimberly has posted the only correct answer at this point in time. It is indeed virga which is evaporative streaks of precipitation. Some recent studies according to Ahrens "Meteorology Today" (2003) suggest that these streamers are actually caused by ice in the process of changing to water.
