I'm writing a wiki for some plant data and I'd like each plant page titled by the scientific name, but now I want to break it down even further and have a page for each varietal. Is there a proper way to list a varietal in a scientific name? Some varietals of tomatoes, eggplants, etc. have significantly different characteristics than others in their species, and there's enough information to justify a full page on some of them. Any ideas?
What is the proper way to write a plant's scientific name WITH the varietal name?
Hi Ircone,
The principles of botanical nomenclature are covered by the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature.
The proper way to write a plant's scientific name, including the variety is: the genus capitalized and underlined or italicized; the specific epithet in lower case and underlined or italicized; the author (capitalized and may be abbreviated, and is never underlined or italicized); the abbreviation, "var." (which stands for variety); the variety name underlined or italicized; and the author (which may be abbreviated and is never underlined or italicized).
Using the above rule, an example: Fritillaria lanceolata var. gracilis S. Watson (where "Fritillaria", "lanceolata" and "gracilis" are underlined or italicized).
(Some books use bold in place of underlined or italicized type and there are other variations of these rules you might see in publications.)
I hope this helps.

Just go to Zip Code Zoo and search the desired species. And please don't forget to cite it properly.
Reply:Genus species 'variety'
