What is the scientific name for the fear of going to jail or being arrested?
The fear of being locked up in an enclosed place is cleithrophobia or cleisiophobia.
Reply:common sense? self preservation? sorry i never heard of a scientific term for that.
Reply:Hi, J. Alfred---carcer is the latin for confined, thus our word, incarceration. How about carceraphobia? Amusing, anyway :)))
Reply:I think you speak about claustrophobia.

What is the scientific name of Crab and Octopus?
Thanks! I cant find it. Whenever i search for their scientific names, i get a list of so many diff. kinds of crabs and octopus.
What is the scientific name of Crab and Octopus?
As you have already discovered, there are actually many different kinds of crabs and octopus.
There are well over a hundred species in the Genus Octopus alone, let alone the other ten subfamilies in the Family Octopodidae, the other eight Families in Suborder Incirrina, or the three families that are in Suborder Cirrina, all of which are under the Order Octopoda and so can all be technically called octopus.
One of the most common octopus species is Octopus vulgaris (which literally means 'common octopus'). It is found world-wide, and is especially abundant in the Mediterranean, Eastern Atlantic and off the coast of Japan. They only reach about 1-3 feet in length, including the arms. These are the octopus most commonly caught by fisheries, used in lab experiments, or sold in the aquarium trade.
Crabs are even more diverse. Many of the critters we call crabs are members of the Infraorder Anomura of the Order Decapoda, Class Malacostraca, under Subphylum Crustacea of the Phylum Arthropoda. This Infraorder also includes critters we call shrimp (i.e. the mud shrimp Family Upogebiidae).
Anomura includes Families such as Coenobitidae (land hermit crabs), Diogenidae (left-handed hermit crabs), Hippidae (sand crabs), Lithodidae (stone and king crabs) and Paguridae (right-handed hermit crabs). Each of these families (and several others) all have numerous species categorized within them.
For example, Lithodidae includes species like Paralithodes camtschatica (Alaskan king crab).
Meanwhile, another Infraorder of Decapods, the Brachyura, also contains many critters we would call crabs, including Family Cancridae, the rock crabs, which includes Cancer antennarius (Pacific rock crab) and Cancer magister (dungeness crab) which are familiar eating crabs.
So the problem with providing a scientific name for the crabs is the fact that 'crab' isn't really a scientific term, since it refers to critters that aren't very closely related.

What is the scientific name for a Japanese orange-breasted starling?
This is a city perching bird. It looks very like a starling with a bright orange breast. It is otherwise black apart from two large horizontal stripes above the eyes. It is also very territorial, as it regularly fights with its reflection in one of our windows.
Do you happen to know its name?
What is the scientific name for a Japanese orange-breasted starling?
This bird is not exactly as you have described, but it is a possibility. The breast can look orange and it does have an orange stripe at the eye. It is a member of the starling family. Do not disreguard this bird without looking at the fotos at the bottom of the page.

also can someone tell what role it plays in the food chain and what type of problems its faced with?

This question should be in zoology (animals) not botany (plants). Probably you are thinking about a particular type of mussel called the Zebra Mussel - an invasive species - which has disrupted the entire food chain in Lake Erie. How do you make a scientific name for an animal?
I'm supposed to make up an animal and plant for my biology class and we have to come up with a "scientific name" for it and I don't know how? I've already got common names for both of them and everything else that's required for the project except for the scientific name. Can anyone help me please?
How do you make a scientific name for an animal?
The "scientific name" is also called "binomial nomenclature" - check the wikipedia entry for more information.
The names are usually Latin, so you could just translate the names into Latin:
"polar bird" - Aves borealis (for the north pole)
"sea bell" - Campana maris
Alternatively, name it after its "discoverer" (yourself):
"Aves colorgardii"
Or something more descriptive, from the details of the animal. So if the polar bird is white, it might be "Aves albus"
One thing to remember in either case is that the *first* term (its genus) should be capitalised, while the second (its species) is not (so "Homo sapiens", "Escherichia coli", etc.)
Also - I am not a Latin Scholar, and Latin has different word structure for different genders, and I don't know if "bell" or "bird" are masculine, femnine, or neuter.
Reply:Polar bird might be. Aves maritimus

Does anyone know what the scientific name for a phobia of oranges is?
I get nervous around oranges, in that I won't touch one for anything, and looking at them or smelling them makes me sweat, adn feel physically sick. I won't even touch a carton of orange juice! Yep, I know it sounds completely stupid to everyone beside myself, but for some reason I have this! Just wondering if anyones knows or could find out what the actual name is as in ________phobia? I've been googling forever and can't seem to find it anywhere!
Does anyone know what the scientific name for a phobia of oranges is?

But a scientific name is not to find, only orange phobia.

Arancia is the Italian and not the Grecian or Latin word for orange, but has Arabic origin ( Arabian medicine has a long tradition ) and it reads nice.

Store bought OJ, home made OJ, whole oranges eaten fresh, orange punches, Tang. Give you problems?
Other citrus fruits (fresh and their juices)
e.g. mandarin, lemon, lime, grapefruit, blood oranges
mixed fruit juices containing orange (e.g. orange-banana-strawberry-pineapple)
Foods containing orange? cakes, pastries, candies, orange jello, marmalaids
Anything derived from orange? orange pectin, vitamin C tablets
Other acidic fruits
e.g. tomato, strawberry, pineapple.
Other fruits? e.g. banana
Non-fruits? veggies, orange colored veggies.
Other foods? e.g. milk
Orange colored Non-food items?

Have you ever dated a highway worker (they wear orange)?
Any other allergies? pollen, medications, antibiotics.
If you are allergic to a protein in it.
It might be heat labile.
Try heating orange juice.
A ceramic pot is better, because acid+heat can eat away certain metal pans, don't want aluminum ions in your body!
5 min just below boiling might work.
You could consult an allergist
Can have a blood and skin test performed.
Or just avoid oranges!
As for a name. How about a phrase:

The closest I can come is "esperidoeidiphobia" which means a fear of citrus fruit.
Reply:I looked through a bunch of huge lists and found nothing.
I know it is a legit condition. Maury Povich had a show and one guy had a fear of peaches.
Reply:I do not have a strong phobia but I have known some who do and seen how they struggled with random encounters that set them to sweating and struggling to remain in control.
Greek for the fruit orange is portokali so if the basis of the fear's name is a greek word then this may help coin a term or search for the term. Portokaliophobia ?
Phobias are usually Greek words because the word phobia is Greek. In this case though I don't know of a Latin word for the fruit other than its genus species name: Citrus sinensis.
Because for you odor is part of the trigger the fear of odors term is Osphresiophobia or Osmophobia. Odors can trigger very strong memory associations. Odors trigger migraines so sufferers learn to associate strong odors with the pain.
Another means of naming could be on the fruit type, hesperidium, if the phobia covers other fruit in the citrus class such as lemons or limes. Hesperidiophobia ?
This could be confused with hesperos meaning 'the west' that is used in hesperophobia for fear of the west.

Is there anything in common between the scientific name and the common name of an organism?
I really need the answer to this question soon. Its part of my school work and needs to be submitted soon. Please reply as soon as possible if you know what to write as the answer. I'm trying to figure it out, too but would really appreciate it if you answered.
Is there anything in common between the scientific name and the common name of an organism?
Consider these generic names: Gorilla, Rhinoceros, Chrysanthemum, Geranium. Get the idea? Then, there are the organisms that have no common name at all, like Archyopteryx, Seymouria, Tiktaalik ....
Reply:Here is an example:
Common name is: mosquitofish
Scientific name is: Gambusia affinis
Gambusia is a common name for a poeciliid fish
affinis seems to mean 'close to' which would relate to the 'mosquito' part of its common name.
Another is Gambusia Aurata with the aurata part referring to its golden color.
There, does that help?
Reply:White oak is Quercus alba.
Quercus = oak
alba = white
So yes, there are some similarities between the common name and scientific name, but this is not always the case.
Reply:the bacteria staphylococcus aureus
staphylococcus is the species, aureus means gold, as this germ produces golden colonies on agar
Reply:do your own homework! or get your mum to do it, thats what i did when i was at school, hahahahahahahahaha

What is the scientific name of a normal morph corn snake?
I am doing a school project and I need to know. Thanks!
What is the scientific name of a normal morph corn snake?
Pantherophis guttata guttata. It used to be Elaphe guttata guttata but was reclassified. The reason for the change is because both new world and old world rat snakes were listed under the genus Elaphe, but scientists determined that they were not closely related enough to be in the same genus, so new world rat snakes were reclassified with the new genus of Pantherophis while old world rat snakes retain the Elaphe genus.

What is the scientific name for the flesh of a fruit?
And is the name different for say, a banana and a tomato?
What is the scientific name for the flesh of a fruit?
The first answerer was mostly correct. But it varies depending on the fruit.
When you say "fruit" are you referring to the botanical definition or the culinary definition?
Apples (the part that you eat) for example are the petals.
This wikipedia article is pretty good, and you can click on terms that you don't understand:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fruit
EDIT:
Think of the fruit as the ripening ovary of the flower. That ovary can be divided into the exocarp, the mesocarp and the endocarp. But sometimes, other parts can fuse with the exocarp, for example.
If you take a look at the wikipedia article, you will see why I'm not going into more detail. It starts getting more complicated quickly.
The study of fruits took up about 1/3 of the semester in both my plant anatomy and plant morphology classes.
Let me know if you have more questions or would like me to elaborate.

What is the scientific name of this plant, and what plant is it very similar to?
A clone, which is formed by asexual reproduction, is a collection of identical individuals. In nature, plants such as strawberries, aspens, and coast redwoods produce clones. Some plants can be cloned by taking a cutting of the plant, placing the cutting in water, and allowing the cutting to form roots before placing it in soil. This plant might be the key to cleaning up large areas that have been contaminated by industrial pollution.

Xena. Planet Xena and her moon Gabriella. I'm not even kidding, that's what they named it. There is current debate as to whether or not it is actually planet because it is so small and so far out, but on that note there is also debate still going as to whether pluto is actually a planet or not. Really, it all depends on how you define planet. As far as I can tell, the debate is mostly due to how small they are as to whether or not they're actually planets and not just planetoids.
