  1. I believe the kataba is Gambusia afinis, which is commonly known in English as mosquito fish. It is hardy and can live even in dirty canals hence the local name "isdang kanal". It feeds voraciously on mosquito larvae, which also explains the English common name. It was introduced here by the Americans precisely to control the mosquito population.

  2. Sorry, definitely not Gambusia affinis, Kataba is a Filipino term for a Molly, Poecillia latipinna. Filipino fish hobbyist offer Kataba as live food offered to carnivorous and piscivorous fishes. Unfortunately, Kataba is a term used loosely to generically mean feeder fish because other hobbyists cannot differentiate it from a Guppy (Poecillia reticulata) and Mosquito Fish (Gambusia affinis).
